Sam Altman was fired as CEO of OpenAI by its board of directors on November 17, 2023. In a post to its public blog the company said, “Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”
Now, only a few days later, OpenAI and ex-CEO Sam Altman have reached a preliminary agreement for his return, resulting in a new board of directors. At this point in time, Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman essentially have gained complete control of OpenAI, with Microsoft making substantial investments in OpenAI and its AI technologies.
