The AI Safety Summit outside of London at Bletchley Park will begin on November 1st, 2023. The UK government provided further information regarding the attendees after criticism that the event would not adequately represent the full range of stakeholders and their urgent issues. The main discussion topics will involve the catastrophic risks of AI, how to identify and respond to them, and defining “frontier” AI models. Depending on one’s perception of the risks, some of the concepts may seem distant and abstract, rather than addressing pressing concerns such as AI’s role in misinformation or in aiding hackers.
The UK aims to establish itself as a leader in AI, both as a hub for AI businesses and as an authority in the field. Also, the event appears to serve as a photo opportunity and PR exercise for the government. The guest list mainly consists of UK organizations, and it is notable for who is absent. Among the 46 academic and civil society institutions, prominent universities like Oxford and Birmingham will be present, along with international institutions like Stanford. However, some notable institutions, such as Cambridge and MIT, will not be participating. Additionally, multilateral organizations like the United Nations will be present.
The participating countries include the U.S., various European countries, Ukraine, and Brazil. Russia is not participating due to sanctions, and, China’s attendance is currently unknown. The attendees from businesses include Google, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, OpenAI, X AI, ARM, Nvidia, Graphcore, and several startups.
