xAI, a distant competitor of OpenAI started by Elon Musk, launched its first edition of the Grok chatbot that is able to process visual data, too. Grok-1.5 is the company’s first-generation multimodal generative AI model, capable of processing not only text, but images, too. xAI exhibited how its new capability can be used in the real world, such as converting a flow chart into Python code, creating a story based on a drawing, and explaining a meme. The new version follows the release of Grok 1.0 and is designed to improve coding and math skills, as well as to process longer contexts to better understand certain queries. In addition, xAI introduced an internal benchmark dataset named RealWorldQA, consisting of 700 images with questions and answers used by xAI to evaluate its AI models. Using RealWorldQA, Grok received the highest score when tested against competitors such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google Gemini Pro.
