Microsoft has created an offline generative AI model for U.S. intelligence agencies, based on GPT-4. The AI system is disconnected from the Internet, and is accessible only through a secure network. Microsoft’s chief technology officer for strategic missions and technology said that 10,000 individuals could potentially access the system. Intelligence agencies are interested in generative AI but worry about the risk of classified information exposure via online cloud services. Microsoft says the large language model developed for the U.S. government is the first to be deployed entirely offline. Additionally, It can read files without learning from them, thereby preventing sensitive information from being transferred in to or out of the platform.
