If you’ve heard about artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, like ChatGPT, but haven’t had a chance to sign up or use one, then here is a simple guide to get you started with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
1. Visit https://chat.openai.com and chose sign in or create an account. You can sign up using an email address or your Google or Microsoft account. The registration process is free, but OpenAI requires a valid phone number to verify your account. Save your login credentials; you will need them the next time you log on.
2. Accept the disclaimers presented by ChatGPT. Take time to read and accept each agreement.
3. Once you’ve logged into your OpenAI account on the ChatGPT website, you will be presented with the an AI tool’s window. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the simple layout of ChatGPT. Here is a list of what you will see:
- Chat Sidebar Buttons: On the left side of the screen, you will find a ‘New chat’ button that allows you to initiate a fresh conversation whenever needed.
- Chat History: The left sidebar stores all your previous conversations for easy access. You can revisit past chats if necessary, and there is an option to disable chat history (but that is not advised). Additionally, you can edit chat titles, share your chat history, or delete it as desired.
- Account: Clicking on your email address or name located at the bottom left of the screen provides access to your account details. ChatGPT is free, but upgrading to ChatGPT Plus (which is found in this section) move you to a paid subscription fee.
- Prompts: This section displays the questions or “prompts” you write and send to AI chatbot.
- Responses: Whenever ChatGPT generates responses to your prompts, they are sent to a textbox that looks like the prompt input box, but ChatGPT’s logo will appear on the left side. (Similar to how text messaging works on your smartphone.) To the right of each response, you will find buttons for copying the text, giving a thumbs up or thumbs down, and providing feedback on the accuracy of the response. This feedback is essential for refining ChatGPT’s future answers.
- Regenerate Response: If you encounter difficulties receiving a response or are dissatisfied with the answer provided, you can click the “Regenerate response” button to quickly generate a new response based on your last prompt without retyping it.
- ChatGPT Disclaimer and Version: In the text input area, OpenAI includes disclaimers, saying ChatGPT may occasionally produce inaccurate information about individuals, locations, or facts. This same section shows the ChatGPT version number.
4. If you are having trouble writing a prompt for ChatGPT, then just ask it to help you with some vacation plans. ChatGPT will chat with you to guide your conversation. Following these steps will grant you ongoing access to ChatGPT so you can use it in the future, too.
