Hitachi, Ltd. recently established a new organization known as the “Generative AI Center” to promote the safe and effective use of Generative AI. This Center will play a vital role in accelerating Hitachi’s growth by maximizing customer value and enhancing productivity through the Lumada business initiative. [“Lumada” is a word created by the Lumada Alliance Program that means: “Illuminate with data.”] Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence (AI) applications that can analyze vast amounts of data and generate diverse content such as images, texts, sounds, and program code. It is expected to revolutionize the future of technology and AI.
The Generative AI Center will serve as a Center of Excellence (CoE) that brings together specialists, including data scientists and AI researchers with expertise in generative AI. Additionally, specialists in various areas such as in-house IT, security, legal affairs, quality assurance, and intellectual property will contribute to promoting the use of Generative AI while managing associated risks. The Center aims to accumulate knowledge and insights by utilizing generative AI in the activities of Hitachi Group’s 320,000 employees. This will enable the creation of a value cycle that offers a safe and secure environment for customers, supporting activities such as writing, summarizing, translation, and code generation.
Furthermore, the Generative AI Center will provide consulting services starting in June 2023 to support customers who are considering the use of Generative AI. These services will focus on use cases and value creation, while also ensuring risk control through their expertise in AI utilization, security, intellectual property, and other relevant areas. Hitachi plans to collaborate with Microsoft Japan, a partner of the Lumada Alliance Program, to provide environment building and operation support services combining Azure OpenAI Service with Hitachi’s strengths in mission-critical cloud system integration.
Hitachi’s commitment to solving customer and societal issues through the development of superior technologies and products is emphasized by the establishment of the Generative AI Center. By utilizing data and technologies, Hitachi aims to accelerate the growth of its Social Innovation Business, contributing to the enhancement of social infrastructure and people’s quality of life. Hitachi will leverage its extensive experience in privacy protection and AI ethics to safely utilize cutting-edge technologies in generative AI, reduce risks, and actively contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
In recent years, Hitachi has been actively involved in AI-driven innovation projects, conducting over 100 projects each year utilizing AI and data analytics through its Lumada Data Science Lab. While embracing the benefits, Hitachi has also recognized the associated risks, including privacy and ethical implications. To address these concerns, Hitachi has established specialized organizations such as the Privacy Protection Advisory Committee in 2014, which assesses privacy risks and implements risk reduction measures. In 2021, Hitachi formulated AI Ethical Principles to evaluate projects and seek advice from an AI Ethics Advisory Board consisting of external experts.
The Generative AI Center aims to create use cases, provide consulting services, and develop guidelines for the safe utilization of generative AI. They will actively engage in the development of new applications, training of digital talents, and share knowledge and use cases across the Hitachi Group and with external experts, customers, and partners. The Center also aims to enhance business efficiency and productivity through internal use of tools such as the “Generative AI Assistant Tool.” These initiatives are aligned with Hitachi’s digital strategy and will contribute to the ongoing digital transformation.
Microsoft Japan has expressed its support for Hitachi’s establishment of the Generative AI Center and its use of Azure Open AI Service, highlighting the potential for accelerating digital transformation and ensuring enterprise-level security and responsible AI practices.
Hitachi’s establishment of the Generative AI Center signifies its commitment to promoting safe and effective use of Generative AI. By bringing together specialists and leveraging their expertise, Hitachi aims to maximize customer value, enhance productivity, and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. Through collaboration with Microsoft Japan and the utilization of their own technologies, Hitachi is well-positioned to contribute to the AI digital transformation and to create a brighter future.
