A bizarre twist of events has taken place in the world of photography. A German artist, Boris Eldgsen, rejected an award from the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards organization after revealing his submission was artificially generated by AI.
The black and white image that won the creative open category showed two women of different generations, with the older woman appearing to cling to the younger one. Despite the organizers being aware of AI involvement, they stated they had been “deliberately” misled.
Eldagsen expressed his hope that his action could open up a conversation about AI generated images, perhaps leading to the creation of separate competitions for them. He stated that he had applied “as a cheeky monkey” to test if competitions are prepared for AI entries. The artist believes AI has left many photographers feeling “threatened and afraid” of losing their jobs.
The World Photography Organisation (WPO), which runs the competition, stated that during their exchanges with Eldagsen, he had confirmed the “co-creation” of the image with AI, and therefore his entry fulfilled the criteria for the category. Despite Eldagsen’s wish for dialogue, the WPO is no longer engaging with him.
The WPO said they recognize “…the importance of this subject and its impact on image-making today.” However, they are committed to maintaining the awards as a platform to champion excellence and skill of photographers and artists.
