A recent Wired report disclosed that Apple, NVIDIA, and other technology companies utilized hundreds of YouTube videos for AI training. The YouTube dataset contained video transcripts from various educational and online learning channels ranging from MIT and Harvard to Mr. Beast, MKBHD, and PewDiePie. Following the controversy, Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that its open-source OpenELM models used this dataset. Apple defended that disclosure, saying the data did not “power” AI, machine learning, or Apple Intelligence features. The publication stated that Apple created the OpenELM model for research purposes and to advance open source large language model development. Apple maintained that it does not use users’ private personal data for training its foundation models. However, the official beta launch of Apple Intelligence (which is Apple’s attempt to brand AI) and the iOS 18 public beta was delayed without explanation, despite Apple’s swears that it hasn’t used stolen or personal content for its AI.
