Amazon unveiled an updated version of its Alexa voice assistant, which the company hopes will strengthen its position in the technology industry’s artificial intelligence (AI) competition. During its September 2023 devices event, Amazon showcased the new Alexa with features powered by generative AI. The updated Alexa will have a more natural voice, engage in more conversational interactions without a wake word, and learn from each user interaction. Additionally, it will be capable of creating and sending messages on behalf of users.
Alexa is not free of all hardware and software bugs; there were a few problems during the Alexa AI demo. Alexa was slow to respond, and the presenter had to repeat questions in order to get an answer. That new Alexa AI feature, named ‘Let’s Chat,’ should be available as a pre-release for existing Echo owners in the coming weeks.
In addition, Amazon demonstrated less dazzling Alexa non-AI features, which can be used to make requests for smart homes, such as adjusting lighting or activating a robot vacuum. Amazon also introduced new hardware, including an updated Echo Show 8 and a Fire TV sound bar. Also, Amazon presented a feature called ‘Map View,’ which provides a digital floor plan of the user’s home for managing smart devices. Users can choose which rooms to add to, or delete from, the floor plan.
