According to SAG-AFTRA’s President, Fran Drescher, Hollywood should regulate the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). The use of generative AI has become a huge issue for both SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild. Drescher’s members have been victims of “deep fakes,” in which their faces and voices are digitally generated for inappropriate purposes without their consent. Drescher believes that Wall Street, greed, and technology combined with a lack of empathy create a dangerous situation. She likens it to “… a deadly cocktail. And I don’t want us to have to drink that poison anymore.” Drescher advocates for strict AI regulations, including written consent to be modeled by AI, and fair compensation both for doing so and for later use of that data. She warns that allowing unrestrained use of AI threatens the livelihood and humanity of the those working in the entertainment industry.
