It could be beneficial for law enforcement, but it also has the potential to enable Orwellian levels of control and monitoring. Powerful AI tools can have both positive and negative uses. There are already examples of this sort of monitoring in China, and the use of AI will make it more powerful, affordable, faster, and evermore effective. Technologies, like drone cameras, have already been used in the U.S. to apprehend criminals. Surveillance planes equipped with specialized 192 megapixel cameras tracked and recorded the movements of the individuals and vehicles over a large area. The captured suspects were directly linked to 75 murders through the surveillance system’s imagery, and many confessed to even more murders. Expect more AI video tracking apps very soon.
