The AI Seoul Summit was held on May 21st and 22nd, 2024. The participating countries pledged to collaborate in setting limits for the risks posed by AI models and to develop standard safety testing for artificial intelligence technology. The 27 member governments and the European Union signed the Seoul ministerial statement, committing to enhance international cooperation in AI safety. This includes establishing severe risk thresholds and interoperable risk management frameworks, as well as promoting credible external evaluations of AI models. In addition, the statement emphasized the need for AI safety institutes to share best practices and collaborate on interoperable safety testing guidelines.
The participating nations also emphasized “innovation” and “inclusivity,” prioritizing AI investment, addressing environmental impacts, and promoting resource-efficient AI models, as well as focusing on education and control. The EU and 10 other countries went further by signing the Seoul Declaration and the Seoul Statement of Intent, while 16 AI companies signed the Frontier AI Safety Commitments agreement, thus obligating themselves to assess risks posed by AI models and to invest in AI safety evaluation capabilities. Paris will host the next AI Action Summit in February 2025.
